How prevalent is the use of the Balanced Scorecard? Are there examples across all industries? Is it growing or shrinking in use and adoption?

2GC carries out regular surveys of Balanced Scorecard usage.

We are currently collecting data for our 2010 survey - if you have a Balanced Scorecard, or a involved in the design / deployment of Balanced Scorecards, please participate in the survey.

Participation involves completing a short questionnaire - takes about 10 minutes either online or via email / fax.

The results will be published in the Autumn of 2010.

To find out more, visit the survey page on the 2GC web site. On the same page you can download a summary of the findings of our 2009 survey.

Hope you find it helpful.

Can you summarize the results of the 2009 survey? Do you see usage increasing or decreasing over time?

Apologies for delay in commenting - didn't realise this system buried comments down here.

The information on the survey page noted in my reply gives you access to a summary of the 2009 results, and is a good place to start. Changes in adoption rates can only be estimated in light of more than one survey. The good news is that the 2010 survey results are in, and already have been sent to those who participated in the survey. If you would like to get a copy of these results, please contact the survey team (use the information on the survey web page for this).

According to the most recent Bain & Company study, the use of the Balanced Scorecard is pretty stable at around 50% of the surveyed companies:

Satisfaction is pretty high, as well, at 80%. This survey doesn't break it out by industry, but just from personal experience, I know that it's more prevalent in the corporate world than non-profit, but it's getting additional traction in education and defense now.
